In New York, many access issues are local issues.
State Parks have leeway to regulate bicycles on a park by park
basis. County Forest access varies county by county. State
Forests have generally been open. NYMBC's mission is to provide
an essential avenue to promote communication between local groups
thruoghout the state.
NYMBC's mission is also to address state-wide issues when and where
they arise that could affect bicycle access to trails throughout the
state. The biggest such challenges are the Draft Region 7 State
Forest Recreation Plan and the Catskill Draft Revised Master
Plan. More on each of these below.
Catskill Park Draft Master Plan Revision
A new draft Catskill Park Master Plan was released on August 25, 2003.
The
new master plan significantly reduces bicycle access. All New York
cyclists need to respond to this draft proposal now so that it can be revised
before going final.
Information on the draft master plan is provided in This DEC Press Release
NYMBC's full coverage of this draft plan, including suggestions regarding how to respondis provided Here

Information on 2002's DEC Region 7 draft master plan. The huge
response
from cyclists around the state has helped convince the DEC to consider
revisions. The revised draft should be released in the near
future. Stay tuned for news on this plan.
